No More Antibiotics
We got the OK from the vet yesterday to stop with the antibiotics. We'd started on them because of the urinary tract infection, but it's been a bit confusing. The day we brought Cassie in, the vet gave her a shot of 'quick acting penicillin', and it seemed to work. Many fewer trips outside, less apparent discomfort, the waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom ending. But 2 days later, the vet called to say that based on the type of infection, the shot shouldn't have done the trick, and that Cassie needed to take antibiotics. From the start of the antibiotic regime, Cassie very very rapidly lost her interest in eating. At first we thought it was the probiotics that we were given to sprinkle on her food, but Maxine stopped that and even scrubbed out her dog food bowl, so that there'd be no trace or smell of it remaining. Still, Cassie was not eating, aside from some limited bribes of chicken, rice, and the like. So, yesterday Maxine talked to the vet. The proximate cause was to get a report on how the phenobarbital levels were (testing 3 weeks after she started taking them). They were OK. But, we also wanted to raise the issue about the antibiotics. And while we know that correlation is not causality, we had noticed the following symptoms. Complete lack of appetite, 1 barf in the middle of the night, and 2 incontinence episodes (one a complete emptying of her bladder). So, with an OK from the vet, Cassie did not get her antibiotics last night. And Maxine, looking to motivate Cassie to eat, gave her 1/2 kibble and 1/2 cottage cheese. It all got eaten. But this morning, the results weren't as good. First effort, Cassie licked the cottage cheese off the kibble. Second effort, Cassie did some of the above, but left a bunch of the cottage cheese, and all the kibble, behind. We're really really hoping that we can turn around this lack of appetite or she'll starve herself.
