Battlefield Promotion to Our Bedroom

Ally was a very demanding dog. In part because of that, and in part because we just didn't know any better, she typically slept in a different room than we did. And, if she woke up in the middle of the night for any reason, she would begin to bark. Going out to the bathroom didn't end it. I don't think we ever found a way to get her to stop.

Aside from one of our houseguests who reported that she'd stayed with Ally petting her for an hour until she fell to sleep...

As Ally got older, we started having her sleep in our guest bathroom, the furthest place from our bedroom. And when we got Cassie (since she & Ally didn't really get along all that well), we had her sleeping in her crate in the bedroom. It's horrible when we think about it now -- Cassie's so shy and scared that being alone in the kitchen couldn't have been good for her. But, we did it.

Until about 8 months before Ally died. We got a shock. Ally spent a couple nights in the hospital, got a blood transfusion, and came back an older dog. While she was away we gave Cassie what we called a "battlefield promotion". We moved her crate into our bedroom.

And that's where she's slept for the past 7 years or so.

But now she's quite fidgety at night. And after particularly loud thumps I imagine that she's just died. And I stay awake worrying about her some more. You see, we've gotten used to her being such an integral part of our lives...
